Psychodynamic Counselling?
Psychodynamic counselling or therapy is based on the principles
of psychoanalytic ideas and other advances in psychological understanding.
In SPT we hold that as well as conscious experience, there are unconscious
processes which can shape our lives in ways that are hard to understand.
Psychodynamic therapy/counselling can help to meet challenges creatively.
It aims to help us understand how past experiences and current behaviour
can affect our lives and come to some more productive resolution
of our difficulties.
By providing a confidential and secure setting, psychodynamic practitioners
offer an opportunity to become aware of the links between early
experiences, current difficulties and frustrations and the way these
are revealed in the growing relationship with a counsellor.
As part of their training, psychodynamic practitioners will have
undertaken at least two years of psychodynamic counselling/psychotherapy.
It is our belief that personal experience of therapy/counselling
enhances our ability to establish a helpful therapeutic relationship
with our clients. Working with a psychodynamic practitioner usually
involves meeting regularly for 50 minutes.
